Flight Dispatcher – AirTran Airways – Orlando, Florida

AirTran Airways is accepting applications for a Flight Dispatcher.  The Flight Dispatcher provides operational control over his/her assigned flights.  This includes pre-flight planning (evaluating operating conditions, assemble, review, and provide flight crews with dispatch paperwork and all information needed to operate the flight safely), monitoring assigned flights to completion and acting as the central point of contact and coordination for assigned flights.  Dispatchers plan and monitor flights to insure they operate safely, economically and in compliance with all applicable FAR’s and Company Policies.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Joint Responsibility with the Captain for the safety and operational control of assigned flights
  • Monitoring the progress of flights, providing flight crews all necessary information needed to assure a safe and economical operation.
  • Prepare flight plans and releases containing such information as Max allowable take off and landing weights, weather reports and NOTAMs, MELs and aircraft restrictions, route of flight, fuel required and other information required for the safe completion of flight.
  • Analyze and evaluate meteorological information to determine potential hazards to safety of flight and select the most desirable and economic route of flight and altitude.
  • Compute the amount of fuel required for the safe completion of flight.  Considerations include the ability to meet all FARs, complete the flight safely and abide by company fuel carriage and tankering practices and policies.
  • Authorizes and controls flights according to government regulations and company policies.
  • Continually monitoring weather conditions over the routes of flight and cities in their control and making timely decisions to insure the ability of flights to operate safely.  When conditions are not expected to permit the safe completion of flight, dispatchers must notify the SOC Duty Manager in a timely matter to discuss the need for cancellations or alternate plans.
  • Provide the Captain with verbal weather and route briefings when conditions dictate.
  • Must remain familiar with all information contained in the initial and read file, DOM, FOM, SOC Bulletins, and other company and regulatory publications.
  • Monitor flights in the taxi in and out phases and follow company Excessive Taxi Time procedures.  Coordinate with Crews, stations and other SOC Crew Members to mitigate excessive taxi delays.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact between the flight crews and the company, to include being familiar with communications between other AirTran departments and the flight crew.  Effectively utilize reference information from other departments to make the best possible operational decisions.
  • Coordinate with the other SOC and company departments to insure vital information required for the safe and economic control and handling of flights is communicated.
  • Utilize DRM skills and the AirTran Best Practices in the performance of all duties.

Job Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid FAA Aircraft Dispatcher Certificate
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Belief in DRM principles and have the ability to interact successfully with various departments and government agencies.
  • Thorough Knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations
  • Ability to read, understand and apply weather reports, NOTAMS, aircraft flight manuals, MELs, FARS, company policies, etc.
  • Must be able to work any assigned schedule to include nights, weekends, holidays and overtime.
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced and stressful environment and be able to multi-task and manage high workload levels effectively.
  • Must be able to handle difficult situations (i.e. emergency responses, conflicts between crew members, time sensitive decisions, last minute changes, etc) in a professional and effective manner.
  • Must have basic computer and typing skills.  Must be able to learn new software applications quickly.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years experience dispatching under Part 121
  • Bachelor’s degree in Aviation or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of Bornemann/Sabre flight planning systems, Flight Explorer and Aerodata.
  • Familiarity with AirTran station operations procedures and policies a plus
  • Other FAA Certifications (private pilot, A&P, etc) or work in other aviation related positions a plus.
